In "The Discovery of Freedom" Rose Wilder Lane wrote: "A solitary man on this earth could hardly survive. His enemies are too numerous and too strong; his energy is too weak. To save his bare existence, he must have allies of his own kind.

The brotherhood of man is not a pretty phrase nor a beautiful ideal; it is a fact. It is one of the brutal realities of human life on this inhuman planet.

All men are brothers, of one blood, of one human race. They are brothers in one imperative desire to live, in one desperate necessity to combine their energies in order to live. Any man who injures another, injures himself, for human welfare is necessary to his own existence."

This basic truth, written over 50 years ago, has been usurped by those who would pervert it to their own ends. The brotherhood of man is a necessary reality for our continued survival on a vicious planet. Yet those who are most capable of understanding the reality of the planet and its dangers are the least recognized today as the keepers of this brotherhood. Instead its banner if held aloft by those who would weaken the strong and thereby endanger us all. We're not living in a mini-series that will wrap up with a nice, happy ending. Survival takes guts. Challenging those who lessen our survival is a nasty, messy job. Are you up to it? (No, I'm not talking about anything even remotely connected to the Middle East)

Our existence on earth is maintained by men and women who face its dangers and meet them on its terms. They are the true keepers of humanity and through their work and sacrifices others are able to continue to live completely ignorant of the brutality that is planet earth.

If my power goes out during a violent thunderstorm a man is up a pole handling electric wires in the driving rain so I can stay safe and dry at home. How do I repay him? A fat salary helps, but to then use the power that he restored to get on my computer and hold forth about how unimportant electricity is or what pigs men are is a long way from proper thanks. Too many of the pampered and coddled are abusing those who make it possible for them to lead such a privileged existence. Too many laws are being written, changed or upheld that oppress those who have no voice in their writing (Clarence Thomas is not a voice for black America. Live with it!) It is time that changed. It is time for the producers of the world to receive their due. In fact, that time is long over-due.
